Plan dividers from the inside out

05 / Drawers

Empty one drawer and sort its contents by use. Remove items you store elsewhere before measuring for compartments.

  1. Measure internal width and depth, rather than the drawer front.
  2. Check usable height beneath the cabinet frame when closing.
  3. Lay out paper rectangles to test a proposed divider arrangement.

Leave some flexible space for irregular items. Adjustable dividers still need enough expansion range and suitable surfaces to hold in place.

Work from the narrowest usable opening

  1. Measure inside the drawer. Measure width and depth between the actual inside walls. Check height at the lowest point beneath the counter or drawer above.
  2. Lay out the longest utensils. Place everyday cutlery on paper in the proposed footprint. Tiered designs may need more loaded height than a flat tray.
  3. Test closing and retrieval. Leave room to grasp utensils and move the drawer freely. Sort duplicate or rarely used tools before adding compartments.
