Three measurements before buying closet storage
01 / ClosetA closet's outside dimensions do not tell you how much storage will fit inside. Measure usable space at the point where the organizer will sit.
- Width: measure at the top, middle and bottom. Use the narrowest measurement. Note hinges, trim and sliding-door overlap.
- Depth: measure with the door closed. Leave space for handles and for opening drawers or reaching into baskets.
- Height: check fixed shelves, the hanging rail and the clothes that will remain above the organizer.
Compare with the exact product's assembled dimensions, not its packaging. Tape its footprint on the floor before ordering. Record centimetres and check the units in the listing.

Measure an everyday working space
- Width: include the opening. Measure the clear opening as well as the interior. Note hinges, sliding-door overlap and any shelf brackets that narrow access.
- Depth: allow a hand to reach. Measure from the usable front edge to the back. Include protruding handles and leave enough room to grip a bin or pull a garment out.
- Height: measure the loaded item. Include hooks, lids and the height of contents. A hanging shelf must clear the lower shelf; a basket needs lifting space above it.
Compare the approaches
| Approach | Consider it for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Hanging shelves | Folded items where rail width is available | Adds rail load and uses hanging space |
| Shelf dividers | Existing folded stacks on a solid shelf | Requires compatible shelf thickness |
| Open baskets | Small loose clothing items | Hides some contents and needs lifting clearance |
